Queering Baltimore Lit

Presented by CityLit Project with fifth wheel press and Mason Jar Press

Baltimore’s queer and trans artists are a huge part of the city’s literary brilliance. Join two Baltimore-based publishers for a live reading showcasing queer dynamos, featuring authors, editorial board members, and contributors to fifth wheel press anthologies and Mason Jar PressJarnal. Featured readers include writer and drag king Zoe Leonard, The Workshop Prince and a Kundiman fellow, who will also serve as the moderator: Alison Lubar, queer, biracial Nikkei poet, educator and author of two full-length poetry books, The Other Tree and Metamourphosis: T. Mae Moll, the Lambda Literary Award winner for Out of Step: A Memoir and the executive poetry editor for Mason Jar Press: Filipino poet and author of Patrilineal and Prey, Aldrin Badiola (he/him) who is also the editor-in-chief of Artists from Maryland: Ashley Elizabeth (she/her), teacher and a Pushcart-nominated author of the full-length collection A Family Thing and four chapbooks, including red line and CHARM(ed). Co-produced by Sarah Daniels, the new publisher and executive director of Mason Jar Press who writes fiction under the pseudonym Persephone King, and nat raum—editor-in-chief of fifth wheel press and author of origin trilogy and this book will not save you—this reading highlights some of Baltimore’s best queer and trans writers who will read work spanning a variety of topics such as LGBTQ+ issues, family and legacy, and identity.

fifth wheel press is an independent community-focused publisher of art and writing by queer, trans, and gender variant creators. Mason Jar Press is an independent publisher of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and literary art that mixes it up. They amplify fresh voices and promote bold work that pushes the boundaries of literary norms, and they believe literature should not only sustain readers but also inspire their curiosity to examine the status quo.

Zoe Leonard

Zoe Leonard (he/they) is The Workshop Prince, a writer and drag king from Phoenix, Maryland. He is a Kundiman fellow and holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College.​The Workshop Prince is a writer and drag king from Baltimore. His work explores the intersection of poetry and performance.

Alison Lubar

Alison Lubar is a queer, biracial Nikkei poet and educator who teaches literature to teenagers, writing to adults, and yoga to all ages. They’re the author of two full-length poetry books, The Other Tree, winner of Harbor Editions’ 2023 Laureate Prize, and Metamourphosis, as well as four chapbooks: Philosophers Know Nothing About Love, queer feast, sweet euphemism, It Skips a Generation, and a microchap, American Kintsugi. Alison is also a board member for Philadelphia’s Blue Stoop and Contributing Editor for just femme & dandy.

T. Mae Moll

Dr. T. Mae Moll is a queer & trans writer & educator in Baltimore. She is the author of Out of Step: A Memoir (Lambda Literary Award) and You Cannot Save Here (Jean Feldman Poetry Prize). Mae’s poetry has also received the Adele V. Holden award for creative excellence and the Bill Knott Poetry Prize. She has been a finalist for the Baker Awards, and her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of Net. Mae is the executive poetry editor for Mason Jar Press, and serves on the board of directors for CityLit Project

Aldrin Badiola

Aldrin Badiola (he/him) is a Filipino poet, and the author of Patrilineal and the forthcoming Prey (2028). His works are published in The Hopkins Review, & Change, and elsewhere. He is the editor-in-chief of Artists from Maryland.He can be bribed with cheesecake and cowboy boots.

Ashley Elizabeth

Ashley Elizabeth (she/her) is a Pushcart-nominated writer and teacher whose work has appeared in SWWIM, Voicemail Poems, Rigorous, and Sage Cigarettes, among others. Ashley’s debut full-length collection, A Family Thing, is published by Redacted Books/ELJ Editions (August 2024). She is also the author of the chapbooks red line (Garden Party Collective, 2024), CHARM(ed) (fifth wheel press, 2024) black has every right to be angry (Alternating Current, 2023) and you were supposed to be a friend (Nightingale & Sparrow, 2020). As cofounder of the Estuary Collective, Ashley strives to provide free to low-cost programming for femme-identifying BIPOC. When Ashley isn’t teaching, working as the Chapbook Editor with Sundress Publications, or coordinating workshops for fifth wheel press, she habitually posts on Twitter and Instagram (@ae_thepoet). She lives on the original land of the Piscataway and Susquehannocks (Baltimore, MD) with her partner and their three cats. Ashley is Black before she is anything else.

nat raum

nat raum (they/them, b. 1996) is a queer disabled artist and writer based on unceded Piscataway and Susquehannock land in Baltimore. They hold an MFA from the University of Baltimore and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. nat is the editor-in-chief of fifth wheel press and the author of origin trilogy, journal of various worries, this book will not save you, and many chapbooks, full-length collections, and photography publications. Past and upcoming publishers of their work include Poet Lore, beestung, Baltimore Beat, Split Lip Magazine, Poetry Online, and others.

Sarah Daniels

Sarah Daniels is the publisher and executive director of Mason Jar Press. She is a former newspaper reporter and holds an MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore, where she teaches writing to undergraduates, high school students, and the incarcerated. Her fiction has appeared in the Rappahannock Review and Coffin Bell under her pseudonym Persephone King.
