An event with Alexandra Elle in conversation with Maureen Nicol, celebrating Alexandra Elle’s new book, The Company We Keep: Friendship, Connection, and Redefining What It Means to Grow Together!

This event is hosted in partnership with Our House Baltimore, owned by Maureen Nicol. It’s a vibrant hub where families can enjoy excellent food and coffee, engage in meaningful programming, and connect in a space designed to nurture their whole experience– just down the street from the Book Festival.

The Company We Keep is a vulnerable exploration of the friendships that shape us, stretch us, and sometimes wound us. With her trademark wisdom and storytelling, Alex invites us not only to celebrate but to examine the relationships in our lives, and to become a better friend to ourselves first.

Alexandra Elle

Alexandra Elle is a New York Times bestselling author and restorative writing teacher. In her work and through her books, Alex aims to build community and healing practices through language.

Maureen Nicol

Maureen Nicol is a creative director, digital storyteller, model, community maker, and educator, with a doctorate in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is committed to the transformative work of balancing cultural programming initiatives and engagement strategies in unique locales. While seeking community through a restorative wilderness experience, Maureen observed that few of these spaces are accessible to women of color. She went on to be the founder of Mamas Who Dream, an organization uniquely focused on designing and spearheading wilderness retreats for mothers of color through an economically sustainable and financially equitable model.

Maureen’s through line is creating spaces and places with a focus on caregivers and children of color and Black parenting. Her latest initiative, Our House Baltimore, seeks to transform the notion of a children’s recreational space into a multigenerational play area with offerings for adults and children alike.
