Longlisted for The Center for Fiction 2026 First Novel Prize, this is a mesmerizing, fable-like debut novel about a mysterious young Black woman whose arrival in an insular neighborhood threatens to shake its foundations. We think it should be mandatory reading.
P.C. Verrone’s work has appeared in FIYAH, PodCastle, Nightmare, and numerous anthologies. He has been a Tin House Resident, a Playwrights’ Center Fellow, and a WNDB Black Creatives Revisions Workshop winner. He graduated from Harvard College and holds an MFA in creative writing from Rutgers University–Newark. He lives in Dallas with his husband, a historian.
Amani Jackson is the Operations Manager at The Ivy Bookshop in Baltimore, Maryland. Amani has worked in and with bookstores across the DMV for the past six years. She has also served on the American Bookseller’s Association’s bookseller advisory committee, as a judge for the American Library Association’s Andrew Carnegie Medal of Distinction and as the ABA Indies Introduce Summer/Fall 2026 committee chair. She lives in the city with her two cats and mountains of books.
